Internal Medicine Department

When a pet is admitted to our hospital, family members often have many questions. We hope the information provided will help you understand how we deliver specialized medical veterinary care and help ease any concerns your family may have.

General Information

The internal medicine department is staffed  by a team of specially trained doctors and nurses who contribute to the care of every internal medicine patient.

Visiting is generally discouraged during brief hospitalizations because of stress experienced by the pets at the conclusion of each visit. In certain circumstances, when deemed appropriate by the internal medicine staff, visits can be arranged, but must be approved by the primary medicine clinician and prearranged by the medicine department staff.

In general, visits are after clinic hours and are typically between 7 pm and 9 pm. Visits are limited to less than 30 minutes, and may be shortened or terminated if the attending emergency doctor finds it medically necessary.

Internal Medicine patients are generally discharged before 10:00 a.m. or between 4:00 pm & 8:00 pm.  Appointments must be scheduled with the internal medicine staff before 6:00 pm to permit adequate time to answer questions and review medications and after-care instructions.

After Hours

Should a problem arise after normal business hours, the Internal Medicine Department is covered by the Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center at Long Island Veterinary Specialists. It is always best to call in advance when possible. However, if problems arise, do not hesitate to bring in your pet immediately. This facility is staffed 24 hours a day by veterinarians and nurses ready to assist you and your pet.

Your cooperation and understanding will help us focus our energies on

patient care.  We are available to answer any questions you may have

during our daily patient updates.
