Ophthalmology Department

When a pet is admitted to our hospital, family members often have many questions. We hope the information provided will help you understand how we deliver specialized ophthalmic veterinary care and help ease any concerns your family may have.

General Information

Long Island’s first full-time veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. John Sapienza, works with a team of veterinary ophthalmic nurses to serve the ophthalmologic needs of your pet. During daily contacts, you may speak to Dr. Sapienza, Ms. Donna Lynam-Crowley (the head ophthalmology nurse), or other members of the ophthalmology department. Our team members are specially trained to manage all types of ophthalmic surgeries, emergencies, and clinical problems.

Owners and family veterinarians are contacted following all surgical procedures. In general, patients spend one night in the hospital after surgical procedures (except cataract surgery where the pet is usually discharged from the hospital the same afternoon). The ophthalmology department nursing staff provides family members with updates daily, including 24- hour post-operative wellness telephone calls.

Visitation is generally discouraged for the short hospitalization stay because of the stress experienced by the pets at the conclusion of each visitation. Most pets accommodate to their new surroundings (including fold down beds and blankets) almost immediately and are kept comfortable by the 24- hour nursing and support staff.

Discharges are scheduled by appointment with the ophthalmology department nursing staff. All major medical questions should be directed to the senior staff member or the ophthalmology nurse. The discharge nurse will review all medications and discharge instructions at the time of discharge.

After Hours

Should a problem arise after normal business hours, the Ophthalmology Department is covered by the Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center at Long Island Veterinary Specialists. It is always best to call in advance when possible, however, if problems arise, do not hesitate to bring your pet in immediately. This facility is staffed 24-hours by veterinarians and nurses ready to assist you and your pet.

Your cooperation and understanding will help us focus our energies on patient care.  We are available to answer any questions you may have during our daily patient updates.
