Emergency & Critical Care

The Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center (AECCC) at Long Island Veterinary Specialists is always open, providing 24-hour intensive care to pets in need. The emergency service is available for emergencies when your family veterinarian is closed (24 hours on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and Monday – Friday from 6:00 p.m. through 8:00 a.m.)

All patients treated at LIVS by The Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center are transferred back to the family veterinarian for follow up care the next business day, unless the patient is unstable or has been referred to a specialty service.

Family members will be contacted the morning after admittance before 11am. If there is a delay in the telephone call, please be patient as our doctors are devoted to the patients in the critical care unit and may be administering care to another emergency case. If an additional telephone call is requested, please arrange this with the doctor.

Lab reports and findings are reported on a daily basis as results become available. A summary of examination findings, diagnostic tests results and treatments will be faxed in a timely manner to the family veterinarian and a copy will be given to the family member.

Most pets acclimate to their new surroundings almost immediately and are kept comfortable by the 24 hour nursing staff.  In certain circumstances, when deemed appropriate by the emergency staff, visitation can be arranged by appointment with the emergency doctor. Visits are limited to  10 - 20 minutes. The doctor on duty will advise you of the length of the visit, based on the patient’s clinical status.

All discharges from the AECCC must be before 9:30 am the next business day. This provides adequate time for the family veterinarians to arrange further testing and treatments once the pet has been transferred to their hospital.

When a pet is admitted to our hospital, family members often have many questions. We hope the information provided will help you understand how we deliver specialized emergency veterinary care and help ease any concerns your family may have.
